OCI adds carbon black capacity in Korea

Seoul, Korea -- OCI Co Ltd has said it is adding 100 000 tonnes of capacity for carbon black in Korea, bringing the company's total capacity to 310 000 tonnes.

The company plans to invest 75 billion won (euro 51 million) to build a third Carbon Black plant with 100,000 metric tons of annual capacity at Gunsan where its Polysilicon manufacturing facilities are located. Construction will commence in the 2nd half of this year, and the project will be completed by the end of 2011 for 70,000 metric tons and by the end of 2014 for 30,000 metric tons.

The new capacity adds to the company's existing Carbon Black manufacturing facilities, which are currently 110,000 metric tons in Pohang and 100,000 metric tons at the Gwangyang plant. Kelly Mun, manager in OCI's carbon black unit told ERJ that the expansion will make OCI the largest carbon black maker in Korea.
