F1: It's going to be Pirelli
By David Shaw, ERJ staff
London -- Pirelli will be the next supplier of tyres to the F1 motor racing series, according to well-placed insiders. Paul Hembery, head of Pirelli's motorsport activities was in Canada over the weekend, finalising details of the contract. The decision is expected to be announced later this week, or early next.
Environmental issues will play a large part in the tyre supply contract over the coming years, with subjects such as REACH, silica, tyre disposal, tyre labelling and sustainable resources being discussed by the FOTA, the Formula One Teams Association and Pirelli.
The F1 teams are currently designing their tyres for the 2011 season, and are becoming increasingly frustrated at the delays in announcing the tyre supplier.
