Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corp. launches “Black Gold Rushâ€
ERJ staff report (TB)
Regina, Saskatchewan -- The Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corp., a non-profit, industry-led scrap tyre abatement organisation based in Canada, has inaugurated its “Black Gold Rush†for holders of scrap tyre stockpiles to volunteer for a one-time-only cleanup.
The corporation said it is beginning the pilot program in southwest Saskatchewan, where it is asking the public and municipalities to “stake their claim†by identifying existing tyre piles. It plans to expand its focus to other parts of the province shortly, and to begin active pickup of tyres in July, continuing until Sept. 15.
Saskatchewan 4-H clubs have volunteered to help with the tyre cleanup, the corporation said. The pilot program will guide the development of a scaled-up project next year.
Founded in 1996, the organisation has collected and recycled more than 13 million tyres collected from retailers or from municipal landfills.
