West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania -- ASTM International has developed a carbon black standard to help firms meet new Environmental Protection Agency regulations to mandate greenhouse gas reporting in the US carbon black industry.
ASTM D7662, Test Method for Carbon Content in Carbon Black Feedstock Oils, is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D24.66 on Environment, Health and Safety, which is part of ASTM Committee 24 on Carbon Black.
Measuring the total carbon content of feedstock oils is an important step in calculating carbon dioxide emissions, estimating the yield of a process or addressing product quality. The new standard applies to most commercial feedstock oils used to make carbon black in a furnace or thermal process, according to the ASTM.
Earlier this year, the subcommittee approved another standard to respond to EPA regulations: D7633, Test Method for Carbon Black Carbon Content.
