NKNH to add 50ktpa of halobutyl rubber capacity in technical upgrade

Swiss-based Welding Engineers to supply dewatering and drying extruders to the Russian synthetic rubber manufacturer
Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan – PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim (NKNH) has been given the green light by local citizens to go ahead with a ‘technical re-equipment’ programme at its halobutyl rubber production facility in Nizhnekamsk.
The company held a public hearing on 30 April, discussing the project dimensions and its environmental impact assessment (EIA), NKNH announced 1 May.
The technical upgrade will see NKNH reducing the production of butyl rubbers at its production site and converting a 50 kilotonne per annum (ktpa) capacity to halobutyl rubber, a key raw material for tire manufacturing.
The move, it said, is in response to the growing demand for environmentally friendly and economical tubeless tires.
The project, which is expected to be completed in July 2022, requires no site expansion and will include replacing old butyl rubber production equipment with “modern, high-tech and environmentally friendly ones.”
Swiss-based Welding Engineers will supply synthetic rubber dewatering and drying extruders which will include a system for cleaning exhaust air from rubber dust, NKNH said.
Nizhnekamskneftekhim started the production of halobutyl rubber at its production complex 15 years ago, using the technology developed by Yarsintez Research Institute.
The unit currently manufactures 150ktpa of the halobutyl rubber products, including chlorobutyl rubber and bromobutyl rubber.
