Japanese car output up overseas
ERJ staff report (PR)
Tokyo – Overseas vehicle production by Japanese automakers in the first quarter of calendar year 2014 totalled 4,317,170 units, an increase of 2.7% from the same quarter in the previous year, figures from the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) show.
This outcome reflects a focus on expanded local production worldwide, except in Asia and Oceania, during the quarter under review, according to JAMA.
Fiscal year 2013 (ending March 31, 2014) saw a growth in overseas production in all regions worldwide except Africa, with the total output of 16,871,224 units that year representing an increase of 6.3% over fiscal 2012.
The biggest gains were in Europe where production increased 23.1 percent to 459,364, led by output from non-EU countries. North American production, meanwhile, rose 3.5 percent to 1,185,703 units in Jan-Mar 2014 compared to the same period a year ago.
