DRAFT Essentra releases EPDM and silicone usage guide
Oxon, UK – Essentra has published a new guide to support machine and material experts working with EPDM and silicone.
The Essentra Components guide is claimed to help "clear up any confusion when deciding which is the best material for a given application."
The guide outlines pros and cons of each material choice, supported by performance tables, compatibility and common usages.
When looking at EPDM, Essentra says that the material is a popular choice due to its water resistance. This is why it is used in many roofing applications.
The material further offers superior electrical insulation, while also offering the sealing capability which is required for gasket production.
On the other hand, silicone is itself a versatile material. A key feature is that it is food safe.
Silicone can also withstand higher temperatures than EPDM. Generally, silicone can withstand temps up to 232°C, where EPDM has a limit of 148°C.
Typical uses for silicone are seen in automotive applications, where the material is used in HVAC systems and other areas where masking is needed. The material has widespread use in other sectors, including construction and consumer appliances.
The guide also outlines how EPDM and silicone compares with other materials, such as natural rubber, SBR, NBR and neoprene.
