ERJ staff report (LMH)
Chennai, India – The All India Tyre Dealers' Federation has approached the Indian government on the need for mandatory certification of tire tubes in the interest of consumer safety, according to the Times of India.
The newspaper reported that the call to Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has suggested strong action against tube and tire manufacturers for flooding the replacement market with non-ISI certified products.
On 13 May 2011, the DIPP implemented the Quality Control Order 2009 for pneumatic tyres used in the automobiles, making it mandatory for manufacturers and traders to produce or import, store and sell tires and tubes with compulsory certification for quality, performance and safety from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), S P Singh, AITDF convenor is reported as saying.
However, Singh said that implementation has not been consistent and that “almost 240 - 250 small and medium enterprises are not complying with mandatory certification from BIS for the tires and tubes produced by them". Singh added that as a result, tubes in tires for trucks, buses, and passenger produced by non-certified manufacturers continue to pose serious safety problems for consumers, leading to the association’s petition to the government.
