With a nameplate capacity to produce 200 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa) of elastomers, the JV facility is Versalis’ first industrial production operation in Asia.

Production includes EPDM, solution-styrene butadiene rubber and butadiene rubber, though Versalis did not give specific capacity details for these polymers.

The production streams are being targeted mainly at the tire and automotive-parts industries, styrenic-polymer modification and technical goods.

Based on Versalis’ production technology, the elastomers facility is integrated into Lotte Chemical’s petrochemicals complex for feedstock-supply and related industrial facilities.

Construction was said to have been completed in a “record time” of 26 months with the engineering project carried out to “advanced” European standards.

The project is “an important milestone in Versalis’ international development strategy,” according to  Daniele Ferrari, CEO of Versalis.

The Korean production facility, said Ferrari, “leverages valuable proprietary technologies” and strengthens Versalis’ position in the global elastomers market.

Versalis was already present in the Asia-Pacific region through commercial units in Shanghai, Qingdao, Mumbai and Singapore.
