Essen, Germany – German speciality chemicals company Evonik Industries has developed “liner-less labels” using its patented Tego RC silicones.
According to Evonik, up to 40 percent of the weight of a conventional self-adhesive label is made up of a release liner that is binned once the label has been peeled off.
Labels, it added, can even be rolled up without sticking to one another.
Evonik said that the new technology, in addition to reducing the total weight and associated material costs by up to 40 percent, will also preserve resources.
“RC stands for radiation cured, which means the silicones are set and cured not using heat, as in the case of conventional self-adhesive systems, but rather using UV radiation,” explained the statement.
"Compared to labelling systems with thermally cured silicones, RC silicones reduce energy consumption and conserve the label," said Stefan Stadtmüller, vice president of surface technologies at Evonik.
"Tego RC silicones can therefore also be used for heat-sensitive materials," he added.
According to Evonik, there is a wide range of final applications for liner-less technology, from the tagging of food packaging and labelling of consumer goods to transportation and logistics.
