Houston, Texas – Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has selected ?KBR Inc.to carry out a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the debottlenecking and expansion of a butadiene extraction plant in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia.
The facility, operated by SABIC subsidiary Arabian Petrochemical Co. (Petrokemya), is one of the largest manufacturing sites in Al Jubail. The value of the contract with KBR was not disclosed.
The site has an installed capacity of approximately 5,150 kilotonnes per annum of petrochemicals including olefins, PVC/VCM, polystyrene and polyethylene plants in addition to utilities and steam generation.
Petrokemya plans to significantly expand the capacity of the butadiene extraction plant, which was built in 1993 and has a current capacity of 123ktpa. The project part of SABIC’s plans to increase its position in the downstream petrochemical market.
