Thai rubber farmers plan price protest
ERJ staff report (BC)
Bangkok – The president of the Para Rubber Growers Co-operative Federation of Thailand announced on 21 April that he will mobilise growers nationwide for a mass protest rally in Bangkok this month, reports the Bangkok Post. The rally is intended to draw the government’s attention to the plummeting price of rubber.
Perk Lertwangpong is reported as saying that growers had given the authorities several months to solve the problem of falling rubber prices but they had “completely failed”.
Rubber prices reached the lowest point in almost two years, with 68.70 baht (€1.83) per kilogramme quoted for third-class raw rubber sheets as of 21 April, while commodity prices continue to rise.
Perk is quoted as expecting prices to “plummet” to 40 baht (€1.07) per kilogramme soon.
Before the rally, rubber farmers plan to dump 60 000 tonnes of remaining fertiliser distributed to them this year by the Office of the Rubber Replanting Aid Fund (ORRAF) on the road. Perk said the fertiliser was of low quality and could almost be regarded as fake. Farmers tell the public about this.
Perk did not say exactly where the rally would be held in Bangkok.
