ERJ staff report (DS)
KwaZulu, South Africa - Union bosses in South Africa have condemned the dismissal of 245 workers from the Dunlop Belting Products factory in Howick in the heart of Kwa Zulu Natal.
A press release from the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) said “The Dunlop workers have been on a protected strike action since August 22, 2012, in demand of a living wage and improved conditions of employment as encoded in the Labour Relations Act.†The statement continued, “Dunlop must, urgently, engage with the Union, or face the consequences of their intransigence.â€
The plant was built in 1919 and makes conveyor belts as well as industrial belts. The Howick unit also mixes compound for all Dunlop Industrial Products facilities.
