Sumitomo christens 2nd Chinese tyre plant

Changshan, China -- Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd. has inaugurated production at its passenger tyre plant in Changsha, two years after announcing the $297 million project.
The plant, operated by Sumitomo Rubber (Hunan) Co. Ltd., will produce up to 15,000 Dunlop passenger tyres per day by 2014, the firm said. Daily production capacity will double to 30,000 tyres by 2017.
The company did not comment on the number of employees at the facility, built on a 5.94 million sq.-ft. plot of land northeast of Changsha.
The plant is Kobe, Japan-based Sumitomo Rubber's second in China. The other is in Changshu, which produces passenger, light truck and medium truck tyres. It opened in 2004.
In China, Sumitomo Rubber supplies local assembly plants operated by Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Volkswagen A.G.
