Japanese auto production up on tsunami-hit May 2011 figures

Tokyo -- Japan's car production in May 2012 was recorded as 781,340 units, according to data from the Japanese federation of vehicle makers, JAMA. Compared with the artificially-low figure of 489,759 units recorded for May 2011, this is an increase of 291,581 units or 59.5 percent, and represents the eighth consecutive monthly production increase as Japan's auto industry recovers from the great Tohoku earthquake of March 2011.
Automobile exports in May 2012 were 387,776 units. Compared with the 202,833 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is an increase of 184,943 units or 91.2 percent, and the fifth consecutive monthly increase.
Motorcycle production in May 2012 was recorded as 41,334 units. Compared with the 53,105 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is a decrease of 11,771 units or 22.2 percent, and production decrease on the same month of the previous year after five months of upturn.
Motorcycle export in May 2012 was recorded as 29,351 units. Compared with the 33,946 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is a decrease of 4,595 units or 13.5 percent, and export decrease on the same month of the previous year after eight months of upturn.
