DHL promotes Tyrebox for shipping tyres worldwide
ERJ staff report (DS)
Brussels, -- DHL, the express delivery and logistics specialist, has introduced the DHL Tyrebox in Europe. The company said it is a patented solution for transporting small quantities of tyres to the market. Offering a convenient, cost-saving and environmentally-friendly packaging method, the box will from 2009 be available across Europe and quickly around the world after that.
Paul Coutts, Executive Vice President Marketing & Sales, DHL Express Europe, said DHL already ships small quantities of special tyres between large warehouses and local distribution and sales points, but tyres are difficult to handle. The company has therefore developed a packaging system which converts the tyre into a square package which can be integrated with the rest of DHL's logistics and materials handling systems.
The packaging is lightweight, but robust and offers the opportunity for brand messages on the external printing. It comes in a variety of weights and strengths and in a range of sizes to suit different tyre dimensions. One application could be as a storage box for Winter tyres, he said.Â

For this they have used courier companies in the past. DHL has now developed the Tyrebox to overcome its own internal difficulties in shipping tyres, and this should reduce costs, and CO2 emissions during transportation.Â
"We have initially launched the DHL Tyrebox with some customers in the automotive industry and it has had very positive feedback.'' The company said the idea is simple and allows a non-conveyable round tyre to be conveyed, transported and stacked. The system is designed to be part of an overall logistics package aimed at tyre makers, distributors and car parts companies. DHL offers theÂ
DHL said customers can choose from a variety of the water-resistant board grades, offering increased durability of the packaging, and improve the appearance of the shipment to the end user. For customers transporting seasonal tyres, an added value of this product is that its design allows re-usable storage. The company said the main box also offers an optional inner box for company literature and ancillary items. The box can carry promotional messages.
