Tokai restructures R&D activities

Tokyo, Japan -- Tokai Rubber has merged two of its R&D activities into a single entity, as part of its Vision 2012 project. The company has merged its “Constructed Element TechnologyResearch and Development Laboratories†and the “New Business Research and Development Laboratories†to create “New Business Research and Development Laboratories†This new unit will help to foster new business and new profit opportunities.
The unit has five main operations. The main planning unit will decide on commercialisation opportunities and plan the research activities. Four laboratories will develop and market the specific products. Under the SR laboratory, researchers will develop new products and markets based on soft-sensor and soft-actuator technology based on new kinds of "smart rubber." The CE laboratory will develop new products in the clean energy field based on modularized technology with a combination of rubber materials and high-precision processing technology.
Two other labs named SE and Eco respectively will investigate multilayer films and environmental products.
