Akron, Ohio -- Goodyear officially ceased tyre production on 21 Dec at its Tyler, Texas, plant with 600-650 jobs lost through layoffs, retirements and transfers to other facilities, the company said.
The plant will continue as a rubber mixing centre manned by 135 employees.
Goodyear opted to cease tyre production at the Tyler plant, which had a daily capacity of 2 ,000 passenger and light truck tyres, following its 2006 decision to exit certain segments of the private brand tyre business.
Some of the capacity was absorbed by other Goodyear facilities, according to the company. Goodyear expects the tyre production shutdown to save it about $50 million (Euro 34 million) a year after taxes.
