India's rubber imports rocket in Q1
Natural rubber imports into India were 65 percent higher in the three months to June 2004, compared with the same period in 2003, according to statistics from the Rubber Board of India. Exports were also higher. Imports rose to 18.9 kt from 11.4kt a year earlier. Total consumption was 182kt, compared with 173 kt in the same three months a year earlier.
The Board said tyre makers imported more rubber following shortages and sharp price increases in the domestic market.
