Tokai Carbon is planning a carbon black plant in the Tianjin district of China. Initial capacity of 40 000 tonnes per year is due on stream in early 2006, but the unit is being built with the expectation that capacity will rise to 100ktpa. The plant is located in the chemical industry park within the Tianjin economic and technological development zone. The unit is the first Japanese carbon black plant in China, and will be a 80:20 joint venture between Tokai and Sumitomo Corp, which distributes Tokai's carbon black. Total investment is estimated at $50 million.
