Design student makes prizewinning chair from 65 000 rubber bands
ERJ staff report (BC)
London – Preston Moeller, 26, an industrial design student at Appalachian State University (ASU), has spent 336 hours designing and building a 3ft tall chair constructed from 65 000 rubber bands on a wire frame, reports Helen Lawson of the Daily Mail.
The chair is reported to weigh 35lb and to support the weight of a grown adult.
The chair won Moeller the $3,000 first prize in ASU’s 6th Annual Chair Design Competition.
He wrote: “It has been moved around to multiple shows and I have been using it for the last couple months as my computer chair and it still looks as good as new.
“It looks as if the frame under the rubber bands is helping to keep them fresh but I don’t expect it to last forever.”
The chair was displayed during New York Design Week as part of the Industrial Designers Society of America’s booth.
