Global tyre sales weakened in January- Michelin

Paris -- Michelin reports that replacement sales of truck tyres continued to decline in January. Other markets showed varying fortunes, but the picture was generally negative.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia. Data is given for January 2012.
In truck tyre markets, Europe's growth in the OE market continues to slow, with growth January and in the year to date of of 0.3 percent. On the replacement side, the first month of 2012 saw a decline of 14.6 percent compared to the same month a year ago.
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets continued to grow, but at a slightly slower rate than the hectic growth seen last year -- the year to date has seen an increase of 39.0 percent. Replacement sales were down by 5.9 percent in the month of January. In Brazil, OE sales fell by a drastic 50 percent in the month of January while the decline in replacement sales wa lower at 13 percent.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets were also weaker. Europe showed a decline of 0.6 percent in the OE market for the month. On the replacement side, growth in January declined by 10.7 percent.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 17.2 percent in January, while replacement sales fell by 12.9 percent in the first month of the year. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 4.5 percent in the most recent month. Replacement sales were up by 8.5 percent in January.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
