Yokohama to double output at new Thai tyre plant
Tokyo--Yokohama Rubber Co. has reportedly announced it plans to double capacity at its new truck/bus tyre factory in Thailand. The plant is due to open in April 2005, but the company has said it already has investments planned to double initial production to 700 000 units per year, with the new capacity on stream in 2007. Yokohama said the total investment int he project will be ¥10 000 million (€73 million).
When the company announced the plant earlier this year, it said the initial phase would have capacity for 315 000 u/y, increasing to 600 000. The plant is located in Rayong province, near Bangkok.
Yokohama said demand from China has created a shortage of heavy tyres, and the new capacity will help fill the shortage. The company added that total production capacity at Yokohama Rubber will be 48 million units per year by the end of 2007, compared with 10 million at the end of 2002.
