Tokyo—Continuing a run of investment moves in the tire industry this week, Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd has announced an expansion of its mould-production operation in Rayong, Thailand.

The project at Thailand Yokohama Mold (Thailand) Co. Ltd (YMTC) is intended to enhance the group’s supply-chain in the ASEAN region, Yokohama said 12 Feb.

Construction of the new facilities began in January 2021, with completion planned for the end of this year, according to the Japanese tire maker.

The project is backed by financial support from a Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) programme to strengthen overseas supply chains and promote cooperation between Japan and other ASEAN countries.

Established in 2018, YMTC supplies tire moulds used in passenger car tires and light truck tires to
Yokohama’s tire plants in countries including Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, India.

The expansion in Thailand will supplement production by Yokohama Mold Co. (YMC), based in Omitama City, Japan, and a business partner in China.

Yokohama’s operations in Asia include production and sales bases in China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and India.
