Saran, Kazakhstan – Tatneft Group has entered agreements for projects relating to the production of butadiene rubber and road bitumen, the company announced 5 April.

Signing ceremonies for both projects took place as part the official launch of construction work on the group’s KamaTyresKZ tire factory in the city of Saran, Karaganda region.

The event was attended by Askar Mamin, prime minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Rustam Minnikhanov, president of the Republic of Tatarstan.

Tatneft said it plans “to implement the project for the production of butadiene rubber in the Atyrau region together with NC KazMunayGas until 2025.”

The unit will have a capacity of 186 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa) of butadiene rubbers and 170 ktpa of isobutane. Butane feedstock for the plant is to be produced by OOO Tengizchevroil.

The synthetic rubber will be supplied to the KamaTyresKZ tire plant in the Karaganda region, as well as for export to European countries, Russia, China, Turkey and others.

“The new joint butadiene production project is closely related to the construction of the tire manufacturing complex in Saran,” said Nail Maganov, general director of Tatneft.

The new tire factory, a joint venture between Tatneft and Allur, will have annual capacity to produce 3 million passenger car tires and 500,000 solid steel cord tires.

Construction work on the $284-million (€241 million) project in Saran, Karaganda region, is scheduled for completion in 2022

Tatneft also started a project to study the feasibility of building a 300ktpa factory in Kazakhstan for the production capacity of road bitumen.

“The agreement on the road bitumen production will allow assessing the possibility of joint implementation of this project in Kazakhstan,” said Maganov.

NC KazMunayGas already cooperates with Tatneft in the areas such as enhanced oil recovery and the development of mature oil fields, said Alik Aidarbayev, chairman of NC KazMunayGas.

“And now we are jointly starting the implementation of a large gas chemical project in Kazakhstan for the production of butadiene [rubber],” added Aidarbayev.
