Houston, Texas – Orion Engineered Carbons has completed a multi-year upgrade to its Qingdao, China facility with the installation of a new “state-of-the-art” cogeneration unit.

The unit, said the US carbon black manufacturer 16 Dec, boosts the site’s sustainability by recovering more energy from the facility.

The upgrade will allow the site to generate electricity from the operations of the plant, while recovering additional energy to provide heating to up to 5,000 homes in the district.

Orion carried out a similar upgrade at its production plant in Borger Texas earlier in October.

At that site, the company explained that cogeneration units use tail gas as fuel to produce electric power.

“This installation is an example of sustainability in action. It deepens our ties with the community by supplying power and heat to the local district,” said CEO Corning Painter.
