Houston, Texas – Orion Engineered Carbons has broken ground on a new logistics centre at its largest manufacturing plant in Cologne, Germany, to support growth.
Spanning 8,850 square metres, the warehouse and distribution centre will have a capacity to store 12,400 pallets, said Orion in a statement 28 May.
Orion produces 160 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa) of 100 grades of carbon black at the Cologne facility, according to Sandra Niewiem, SVP speciality carbon black and EMEA region.
“The new, modern distribution centre will enable us to further grow our business in a location where we have deep roots," she added.
The new building will have eight truck docks, which according to Orion, will “equalise” plant traffic of 100 trucks a day.
The facility features “space-optimised” shuttle warehouse system and an automated material conveyor system which ensures “efficient flow of goods.”
Orion will lease the warehouse from Grieshaber Logistik GmbH, a German logistics service provider with its headquarter in Weingarten, Germany.
Construction work on the distribution centre is expected to start “in the next few weeks.” The Orion statement did not provide a completion date.
