London – Bill Mortel has been announced as recipient of the 2020 Hancock Medal, the biennial Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IoM3) award for outstanding service to the rubber industry.
Mortel has served the industry through various roles with the British Rubber and Polyurethane Products Associated, the National Skills Academy for the Process Industries and the institute’s Rubber in Engineering Group since 1992.
Since 2011, Mortel has also been the industrial representative for the UK and the IoM3 on the International Rubber Conference Organisation Committee and has directly supported UK conferences RubberCon 2014 in Manchester and IRC 2019 in London.
Mortel joined what was then Metalastik as an apprentice in 1970 and rose through the ranks of the same company, through various mergers to what is now Trelleborg Antivibration Solutions in Leicester, UK.
He became director of advanced technologies at Trelleborg Antivibration Solutions in 2012 before retiring in July 2019.
The Hancock Medal award also reflects Mortel’s publication of some 35 technical papers in journals and in conferences throughout his career.
