Brussels – Chemicals industry group Cefic has called on the European Commission to support its efforts to maintain the supply of essential goods throughout Europe amid the Covid-19 crisis.
In a letter to EC president Ursula von der Leyen, the European industry body noted the supply-chain issues being created by the outbreak and emergency measures, such as border closures.
The chemicals industry, it noted, produces substances used in products such as ingredients for disinfectants, active pharmaceutical ingredients, fibres for mouth masks and wastewater treatment products.
While Cefic is “actively coordinating” with other European sectors and the Commission, the group added: “We need your support. We need European and EU-wide solutions.”
In particular, the association called on the Commission president “to find flexible solutions for regulatory waivers and exemptions in transport.”
Cefic also wants measures to facilitate the production of biocidal disinfectants, for which EC body DG Sante and the European Chemicals Agency “have a crucial role to play.”
