EChA: REACH-IT to be upgraded today
ERJ staff report (DS)
Helsinki, Finland -- ECHA is due to release an upgraded version of REACH-IT later today (11 November). The upgrade is meant to improve the accessibility and responsiveness of the system, following widespread complaints that the system was unable to cope with the volume of traffic it was receiving. This release will also allow companies to claim registration numbers online for new substances they notified under previous legislation.
Finally, an Industry User Manual (IUM) on REACH-IT will soon be launched.
With over one million pre-registrations already in the REACH-IT database and close to 15 000 companies signed up, the system is under severe pressure. The number of daily users has increased from below 2 000 in September to close to 5 500 in early November and between 20 000 and 50 000 pre-registrations are currently processed daily. The previous REACH-IT release on 24 October reduced the processing queue for bulk preregistrations but many users were still having difficulties in accessing REACH-IT.
ECHA said it anticipates an even greater load on REACH-IT during the three remaining weeks before the 1 December 2008 deadline. The organisation intends to "explore additional measures to ensure that companies can successfully pre-register by that date." The organisation made no comment on whether the deadline will be extended to allow for the difficulties experienced by potential registrants.
