FDA proposes warnings against STDs on condom packaging

Washington DC — The US-based Food and Drug Administration has proposed changes to the packaging of latex condoms and point-of-sale materials. The proposals would make manufacturers warn purchasers about the dangers of sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs), and say that condoms do not provide full protection against all STDs, including herpes and human papilloma virus.

The FDA also suggests that condoms lubricated with nonoxynol-9 (N-9) should carry a warning that N-9 “does not protect against HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases.”
