Washington D.C.--The US-based Tire Industry Association has petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for reconsideration of the final rule on tyre pressure monitoring systems the agency issued April 7.
"NHTSA has made what TIA believes to be a huge mistake," TIA said regarding the agency's decision to allow 20 minutes between the TPMS sensing a problem with a tyre and warning the driver. The first version of the standard allowed only 10 minutes. "(T)his additional 10 minutes will allow an underinflated tyre to further deflate, overheat and potentially fail," the association said.
TIA also reiterated its opposition to the rule's trigger level of 25 percent below the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure. Several organisations so far have issued petitions for reconsideration, including Volkswagen of America Inc. and several TPMS manufacturers.
