Plymouth to close manufacturing facility
Canton, Massachusetts -- Plymouth Rubber Co. will discontinue manufacturing at its Canton plant within the next three years and transfer production to other company factories, including one being built in China.
About 350 currently are employed at the Canton facility--which makes rubber and plastic products, including a variety of tapes and films--and about 275 will be affected by the move. Plymouth will continue to produce tapes at its other plants in the US and Europe. It also has formed a joint venture in China that currently is constructing is a factory to manufacture polyvinyl chloride tapes.
President and CEO Maurice Hamilburg said the company has had difficulty competing profitably from the Canton location with tapes produced in Asia. "We have resisted the trend for several years," he said, "but ultimately have concluded that this change in strategy is necessary for our survival as a manufacturer."
