Pirelli UK loses Euro 1 million-worth of rubber to fire
Carlisle, UK -- A fire at a warehouse near Pirelli's tyre factory in Carlisle, UK, destroyed over Euro 1 million-worth of rubber compounds destined for use at the Pirelli factory on Monday.
The warehouse, about 2 miles outside Carlisle and 7 miles from the factory, is on a former RAF facility, but is close to the River Eden, making pollution a significant risk during the firefighting operation.
A spokesman for Pirelli said the company had about 500 tonnes of various different compounds in the warehouse, worth a total of some £850 000. He added that operations at the factory would not be disrupted by the incident.
