Mitsui to double capacity for Tafmer olefin elastomer in Singapore
Singapore - Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. (MCI) is to build a second 100 kt/year plant to make its range of polyolefin elastomers known as Tafmer. The new plant will be managed by Mitsui Elastomers Singapore Pte. Ltd.(MELS), a subsidiary of MCI. This increase will allow MCI to secure stable supply of the material, in response to rapidly growing demand in Asia.
The new unit will have capacity for 100 ktonne/ year, bringing total Tafmer capacity in SIngapore to 200 kt/year. Construction wil start in Marcdh 2008 and the unit is expected to be on stream in August 2009. Mitsui said the total investment wil be some ¥19 000 million (€113 million)
According to Mitsui, Tafmer is "a flexible and light resin modifier which dramatically improves impact resistance for moulding materials such as automobile bumpers and sealability for packaging materials, when blended with thermoplastic resin such as polyethylene or polypropylene. It is also applied to midsoles of athletic shoes, thanks to its property as an excellent flexible moulding material. "
