Michelin warns consumers about cheque scam
Greenville South Carolina - Michelin North America Inc. is warning consumers in the US and Canada that an apparent scam involving phony prize notifications are being sent in the company's name.
Michelin said it learned of the scam from some consumers. The letters claim to be “consumer prize award notifications,†the company said. The letters instruct the recipient to deposit the enclosed cheque then write a new personal check to cover taxes and administrative fees associated with the prize. Recipients are told they will then receive another cheque for their winnings.
“These Michelin cheques are completely fraudulent,†the company said in a statement. “Michelin has absolutely no involvement in any programme or sweepstakes of this nature.â€
The tyre maker urges consumers who receive these letters to contact law enforcement agencies and to contact the company.
The company said it has alerted authorities in the US and Canada.
