UK tyre body says more tyres are likely to be dumped on fast-fit forecourts
ERJ staff report (DS)
Solihull, UK -- The UK tyre recovery body says tyres dumped illegally on the premises of legitimate companies is costing them money. A third of all National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) members report having tyres dumped on their premises overnight, and large fast fit retail chains claim they have to dispose of up to 15 percent more tyres that they remove from vehicles due to dumping on their premises by unscrupulous traders.
Karl Naylor of Group Tyre addressing the Tyre Recovery Association Forum held in the Midlands said, "There is certainly some evidence of organised crime becoming involved in this trade. It is potentially very lucrative for these gangs and seen by many as a victimless crime. And yet there is a cost to remove and responsibly dispose of these tyres and that cost ultimately has to be passed onto customers."
Naylor said reports from local authorities show fly-tipping has increased dramatically over the past few years, which can only suggest that tyre dumping on tyre retailers' premises is likely to increase beyond the current levels. "The cost to the tyre trade could double in the next couple of years", said Karl, "despite the fact that Britain has ample recycling and recovery capacity"
