Manitoba's tyre stewardship programme comes into effect
ERJ staff report (DS)
Winnipeg, Canada -- Canada's Manitoba Province has introduced a new scrap tyre management system called Tire Stewardship Manitoba (TSM). This not-for profit agency created by the tyre industry will replace government's scrap tyre program.
An immediate effect of the program will be the launch of a permanent collection of off-the-road tyres from landfills and dealers' yards this spring, which had previously been conducted by the government program on a pilot basis.
“A significant change under this program is the ability of TSM to support tyre recycling through Eco-Fees charged on a broader range of new tyres that more accurately reflect province wide collection and processing costs,†said Brett Eckstein, executive director of the programme.
According to TSM, scrap tyres can be a health and environmental hazard. Without proper management, tyres can pile up in the landscape creating a fire hazard and breeding habitat for mosquitoes. Manitoba has had a successful tyre recycling program since 1992. Over23 million (Canadian) dollars have been paid to Manitoba processors resulting in the equivalent of 11.3 million tyres recycled.
