Pre-register for REACH, only if you intend to register - ECHA
ERJ staff report (DS)
Helsinki, Finland -- ECHA, the European Chemicals Agency, has recommended that chemical companies only submit pre-registration details for chemicals they wish to fully register under the REACH system. The body adds, "Companies wishing to have some of their preregistrations deleted should send such a request by registered mail to ECHA."
ECHA said two companies have pre-registered every single chemical in the entire EC inventory. It comments, "This practice should not be followed as it is not in accordance with the aim of pre-registration which is designed for data sharing in advance of the registration. Preregistration of the entire inventory impacts heavily on the usefulness of the list of preregistered substances."
The Agency is now restricting the number of substances that can be submitted via bulk pre-registration files to 10,000. If a company would like to pre-register more than 10,000 substances they need to contact the ECHA Helpdesk for prior approval.
To date, said ECHA, it has received 352,641 pre-registrations. The highest number was from Germany, but UK companies have pre-registered on average, over 100 substances per company. German companies pre-registered around 75 substances each, while other countries are all below 25 substances per company.
