Lord wins contract for Korean helicopter parts
Cary, North Carolina -- Lord Corp. has won a contract to supply main and tail rotor spherical bearings and dampers for a South Korean helicopter program.
The award, made by Korea Aerospace Industry and Korean Air, calls for Lord to produce the parts for an 8-ton transport helicopter that is slated for its initial flight in 2010 and production in 2011. It's being developed by the Korean Ministry of Defense and is designed to carry nine passengers.
It is intended to replace many of South Korea's 700 helicopters, Lord said.
The rotor tail damper is made of a customized elastomer and metal assembly while the main and tail rotor spherical bearings use high-capacity laminate. Elastomers used on the bearings are customized by Lord, the company said.
