Bridgestone to build second tyre plant in India
ERJ staff report (TB)
Tokyo -- Bridgestone Corp. plans to invest yen 50 000 million (Euro 400 million) through mid-2013 to build a car and truck tyre plant near Pune, India, to support growing demand for radial tyres in that Asian nation.
The plant, scheduled to start producing passenger tyres in early 2013 and truck tyres by mid-2013, will be Bridgestone's second in India. The other is a 12-year-old passenger tyre plant in Indore, where Bridgestone is expanding car and light truck tyre capacity and adding medium truck tyre capacity in a $56 million project slated for completion next year.
The new plant will reach its nameplate capacity of 10 000 passenger and 3 000 truck/bus radials a day by 2020. Tokyo-based Bridgestone did not comment on the expected employment.
Bridgestone India Pvt. Ltd. has secured a 190-acre (770 000-sq.m) plot in an industrial estate near Pune in India's Maharashtra State for the factory. The site is about 105 miles southeast of Mumbai near India's western coast.
Tyre demand in India is expected to grow significantly as automotive production and unit sales increase in step with the expansion of road infrastructure that is the result of economic growth, Bridgestone said.
