Half of UK Motorists support winter tyre legislation - survey
ERJ staff report (DS)
London --Nearly half of UK motorists would like to see winter tyres be made mandatory, according to a new poll by Motorpoint.
An online study by the car supermarket found 46 percent of people supported the introduction of legislation that would compel drivers to fit winter tyres (often known as snow tyres). Over 1,400 people took part in the poll on the company's website.
The recent bad weather in the UK saw a record surge in demand for winter tyres with the likes of Kwik-Fit selling over 50,000 last year, up from 2,000 the previous year.
Says David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint: “While Government legislation may be a step too far at present, given the shocking state of our roads during the recent bad weather, winter tyres could be a sound investment for many people in the future.â€
