Global tyre sales up in 2011 - Michelin

Paris -- Michelin reports that global tyre sales were almost universally higher in 2011 compared with 2010.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia, but the data shows growth in 2011 over the previous year. Data is given for December, and for the year to date, which covers the full 12 months of 2011.
In truck tyre markets, Europe's growth in the OE market is continues to slow, with growth in the full year of 34.5 percent, though year-on-year growth in December was negative, at 4.2 percent below the same month of the previous year. On the replacement side, growth in the full twelve months of 2011 of 5.6 percent weakened sharply in the last few months, with the December figure down by 12.0 percent.
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets continued to grow, but at a slightly slower rate than the hectic growth seen earlier in the year -- the full year saw an increase of 56.3 percent and growth of 41.2 percent in the month of December. Replacement sales were up by 5.9 percent in the full year, but fell by 8.4 percent in the month of December. In Brazil, OE sales rose by 20.7 percent in the first twelve months, and the growth rate accelerated to 37.6 percent in December, while replacement sales were up by 5.4 percent in the year to date but fell by 5.0 percent in December.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets were once more weaker. Europe showed growth of 7.0 percent in the OE market for the full twelve months, and grew by 1.7 percent in December. On the replacement side, growth in the year to date was up by 5.4 percent, but declined by a massive 19.0 percent in December.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 10.0 percent in the year to date and accelerated to 58.6 percent in December, while replacement sales were down by 1.2 percent in the year to date, and down by 8.7 percent in December. In Brazil, OE sales rose by 4.28 percent in the year to date and grew by 3.5 percent in the most recent month. Replacement sales were up by 3.3 percent over the twelve months and by 3.5 percent in December.
