'Eco-friendly' vehicle shipments in Japan up 2%

Tokyo - JAMA, the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association, said that domestic shipments of eco-friendly vehicles in fiscal 2011, ended 31 March 2012, totaled 4 479 435 units, up 2.3 percent year-on-year.
Over 80 percent of those shipments comprised vehicles whose fuel efficiency met or surpassed 2010 standards and whose exhaust emissions were down by 75 percent compared to 2005 standards, thereby qualifying them for a four-star rating signifying top performance in fuel-efficient/low-emission vehicle classification.
JAMA noted that sales of electric vehicles were up by 223.1 percent totaling 16 741 units, while hybrid vehicles were up 149.4 percent totaling 666 017 units.
Vehicles with emissions down by 75 percent (4-star) from 2005 standards were up 124.3 percent totaling 3 634 163 units, while vehicles with emissions down by 50 percent (3-star) from 2005 standards were down 82.2 percent at 161 437 units.
