Local contractor wins Iranian tire project
Tehran – After a lull of over a year, new tire production projects in Iran have seen advances during the past few weeks, with, most recently, a local contractor winning a €200-million construction deal.
Gostaresh Tire Razi Co. (GTRC), which is one of the four greenfield tire projects Iran announced in 2015, awarded the project to semi-state-owned EPC contractor Sabir on 27 Dec.
To be constructed in western city of Sanandaj, Kordestan Province, Sabir is expected to employ “top-rated European machinery suppliers” for the project, according to GTRC vice-president Kamran Afshar-Imani.
“Materials handling will be all [be] automated and we will be using automation systems, but we haven’t made a full decision yet,” Afshar-Imani told ERJ.
Sabir will have nine months to conclude deals with financers and suppliers for the 50 kilotonne per annum (ktpa) plant.
Some 30% of the plant’s products will be all-steel light truck tires and the rest will be passenger SUV tires, for local as well as neighbouring central Asian countries.
Razi Tire is one of four greenfield tire projects being pursued by the Iranian government under a plan to add 200,000 tonnes/year of production capacity in the country.
Further details of tire plant projects in Iran will appear in the Jan/feb issue of ERJ magazine.
