Dodoma, Tanzania – A senior Tanzanian official has ruled out reports about revamping the 1969 General Tyre East Africa (GTEA) plant, saying the government plans to build a new tire manufacturing facility in the country.
According to Tanzania Daily News, permanent secretary in the ministry of industry, trade and investment Adelhem Meru said that a team of experts has been formed to advise the government on how to invest on the new factory.
Earlier in April, reports suggested that the government of Tanzania was planning to “revive” the Arusha-based GTEA and wanted the factor to start operation soon.
But Meru said that due to the “outdated” technology used at the plant, there were no plans to revamp it.
