Milan –Pirelli is to receive a free grant worth €1.9 million from the Lombardy regional government for its ‘total safety system’ R&D project, the tire makers announced 9 Feb.
The project, being conducted at Pirelli‘s research centre in Milan, is scheduled to run for 24 months at a total cost €5.35 million.
The aim is to develop a new generation of tires based on the concept of “total safety”, according to a Pirelli press statement.
The research, it said, will encompass all phases of product conception and planning: from the use of new materials, to the development of new fully automated finished product checking, to the implementation of new application safety systems based on tire sensors.
“The competitiveness agreement with Pirelli demonstrates how the synergies between the public and private sectors bring concrete results here in Lombardy,” said the president of the Regional Government Roberto Maroni.
According to Marco Tronchetti Provera, executive vice chairman and CEO of Pirelli, the regional government’s contribution will “enable the launch of a project aimed at the creation of tires that are always safe and environmentally sustainable, able to offer clients not only safety and high performance, but also solutions that respect the environment.”
