ERJ staff report (BC)
Winchester, UK – A touring car racing driver has got behind a fundraising drive for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance charity, reports This is Hampshire.
Fergus Walkinshaw, a competitor in the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup calendar and British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) package, gave his backing to the charity’s Bag a Bra campaign at the air ambulance’s base near the Thruxton race circuit.
The charity is gearing up for its “Bag a Bra” day on 23 May – where, as part of a fundraiser for the ambulance, women are asked to bring along their old brassieres, which are re-used by women in Africa.
The 22-year-old team owner-driver became the first motorsport advocate for the Association of Air Ambulances in September 2012.
Walkinshaw is reported as saying: “We have some fun activities planned to help drive awareness and encourage fundraising for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance at Thruxton. We hope Ginetta and BTCC fans will help support this vital local service.”
It currently costs more than £125 000 (€148 000) per month to operate the air ambulance service, including the lease of the aircraft, pilots, fuel, and maintenance. The service receives no government funding and relies on public and corporate support.
